Jeon Eun Seon (전은선) is a hula hoop dancer, performer, and community builder based in South Korea. Born and raised with a deep passion for music and dance, she performed at school and city festivals from a young age — but spent her twenties in careers far from her dreams, dreaming all the while of becoming a choreographer.

She found her courage in Hermann Hesse’s Demian, became a professional pole dancer and instructor, then discovered hoop flow in 2020. Since 2023, she has been gifting polypro hoops, offering free classes, and quietly growing a hoop community in a country that is only just beginning to discover this art form.

I was born and raised in South Korea with a passion for music and dance — performing at school and city festivals from a young age. But my parents believed it would be difficult to succeed in the arts, so I spent my twenties working in fields far from my passions, dreaming of becoming a choreographer but lacking the confidence that anyone would support me.

In my late twenties, I began to feel that my life lacked meaning, and I longed to live more fully. I found the courage to break free from stability through a powerful message in Hermann Hesse’s Demian:

“The egg is the world. Whoever wants to be born, must destroy a world.” — Hermann Hesse, Demian

I became a professional pole dancer and instructor — only to have that career paused by COVID-19 in 2020. In that stillness, I discovered hoop dance online, and a new chapter began.

Then in the spring of 2023, something extraordinary happened. I met my hoop idol Skyflowartist in Korea — saw her flow in person, heard her stories. She gifted me a beautiful bronze-colored polypro hoop from Hoopologie, and it became a treasured symbol of transformation. That hoop cracked open a new world.

This community is incredibly special — seeing people with diverse backgrounds come together to dance freely and express themselves through flow arts has been a profound source of inspiration. Although the hoop community in Korea is still small, my closest collaborator — a female magician within the Korean hoop flow community — has opened her performance stages to me and shared exciting plans for future projects together. Her encouragement has been invaluable in helping me push my limits and grow as a performer.

“I believe the flow arts community holds great potential for empowering women — creating job opportunities, fostering entrepreneurship, nurturing creativity, and supporting financial independence.”

Thanks to this inclusive global community, I’ve expanded my skills and connected with people who share the same love for hoop dance. I’m passionate about introducing this joyful culture to more people — especially those who haven’t experienced it yet — and making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

When COVID-19 paused her pole dancing career in 2020, Jeon found herself depressed and living what felt like a meaningless daily life. Then hoop dance appeared online — and something shifted.

For a few years she struggled to fully immerse herself in the culture, feeling disconnected, until the spring of 2023 changed everything. Meeting Skyflowartist in person, receiving that bronze Hoopologie polypro hoop, reignited everything.

“Now, hoop dance has become a vital means of self-expression for me. Through hooping, I’ve become more flexible both physically and mentally, gaining confidence and creativity.”

She is grateful to release her emotions through hoop dance and to connect with hoopers from around the world. The journey has brought her joy — and she looks forward to continuing to grow, as both a hooper and a member of this amazing community.

To Jeon, flow state means complete immersion and meditation. She believes it is essential to have alone time each day — time to return to yourself.

“When I’m hooping, I lose track of time and feel as if the boundaries of space disappear, leaving just me and the hoop. All my worries and daily stresses fade away.”

Just like flowing water or wind, she strives to incorporate that same fluidity into her hoop dance — to flow freely, to be both present and unbound.

Three words that come to mind when she thinks of hoop dance:
