Rivets and Push Buttons: Which Ones to Use
Pick the right rivet and snap button for your hoop and insert size — here is the full sizing breakdown.
Video transcript
Let's talk about rivets and push buttons — a topic we're always discussing with new hoopmakers. It's important to know the differences between the sizes so you're successful from the beginning. Hoopologie sells two sizes of rivets: 1/8 inch and 3/32 inch (tiny rivets). Both sizes can be used for any size hoop, but we tend to use tiny rivets for 3/4-inch OD and under — the tiny rivet is smaller and lighter.
What do we use rivets and push buttons for? The push button lets you open up the hoop and coil it down for travel. Push buttons aren't strictly necessary, but they're used in most hoop connections for convenience in shipping and traveling.
Snap button sizing: extra-small snaps are for 1/2-inch hoops using 3/8-inch insert material; small snaps for 5/8-inch and 11/16-inch hoops using 1/2-inch insert material; medium snaps for 3/4-inch hoops using 5/8-inch insert material; and large snaps for 7/8-inch and larger PE hoops using 3/4-inch insert material. Universal straight-leg snaps are for 5/8-inch, 11/16-inch, and 3/4-inch hoops using 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch insert materials.
