How to Measure Tubing for a Hula Hoop
Use a little simple math — diameter times pi — to calculate exactly how much tubing to cut for any hoop size.
Video transcript
So how do you measure a hula hoop? Hoops are generally measured by outer diameter, and that's the standard practice at Hoopologie. First things first: how do you calculate the length of tubing needed to make a specific size hula hoop?
To calculate the amount of tubing to cut, you first need to know the diameter of the hoop you wish to make. For example, if you want to make a 34-inch hoop, take the number 34 and multiply by pi (3.14) to get an outer circumference of 106.76 inches. That's how many inches of tubing you'll measure out to make a 34-inch hoop.
Keep in mind that it's a good idea to measure slightly over, so you have room to make a clean connection. How much over depends on the hoop: for a bare hoop we measure approximately 1/8 inch over the exact calculation; for beginner hoops we measure the exact length; and for taped performance hoops we measure one and a half inches longer than the calculation.
