Hoopmaking Tools Explained
Rivets, push buttons, boring tools, pipe cutters, riveters — here is every tool you need to start making hoops.
Video transcript
Let's go over the different tools you're going to need. Rivets are used to secure one side of the insert piece to the hoop, while push buttons are used on the other side to make the hoop collapsible. The push button lets you open the hoop and coil it down for travel. Push buttons aren't strictly necessary, but they're used in most hoop connections for convenience in shipping and traveling.
The boring tool is a nifty tool that seasoned hoopmakers come to appreciate. It comes in two necessary sizes — 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch outer diameter. Used in conjunction with a drill, it's basically a drill bit with sharp, rounded razor edges that corrects the inner diameter of a tube so the insert fits perfectly and isn't too tight. Push the end of the tool into the tube slowly, keeping a firm grip on the tube with your opposite hand — going slow keeps you in control. It doesn't take much force, and the tube can be corrected in a matter of seconds.
The next important tool is pipe cutters. PVC pipe cutters come in a variety of styles, and the ratchet cutters are the most common at the hardware store. You'll need a pair to make any kind of hoop. At Hoopologie we use spring-loaded cutters, but there are a number of cost-effective options available. You'll also need a hand riveter to place the rivets. Riveters can be found at hardware stores, and Hoopologie sells a high-quality version as well. Quality varies between brands — we've had many riveters break over the years, so we only recommend higher-quality tools. If you're making a lot of hoops, there's also a cordless air riveter; it's more expensive but doesn't require a wrist action, so it might be a good choice if you want accuracy and efficiency.
