How to Make a Sectional Travel Hula Hoop

Make a sectional hoop that breaks down for travel, with interchangeable sections that fit together every time.

Let's talk about how to make any hoop into a sectional hoop. Take whatever you're making and measure the circumference, then divide the circumference by however many sections you want: divide by five for five sections, by four for four sections, by three for three, by two for two. Determine the length of the sections from that math, then measure out and cut each section from the coil of tubing.

Once you have all your pieces cut, perfect each end of each section (see our connection perfection video for a demonstration). Install the connector with the rivet side first — the rivet holds the insert in place while you drill the hole for the push button. We also recommend a guide for drilling the push-button holes: it's basically a one-inch-long piece of tubing one size larger than the hoop you're making, with a hole drilled in the exact spot where the push button needs to go.

Slide this guide over the end of the section where you're installing the push button, then reconnect the sections — this helps you place the push button in the exact same spot on each section so the sections are interchangeable. Make sure the guide is lined up with the end of the tube and the hole is centered, then drill. Once your holes are drilled, install the hardware at the connections (see our polypro hoop connections video).

We recommend polycarbonate inserts for sectional hoops, though polypro inserts will work as well; we don't recommend HDPE inserts for sectionals. Making sectionals is a more advanced technique and takes a lot of practice and patience. Good luck and have fun!
