Symoné
Washington D.C. → London
"You can be a masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time."
Symoné is a professional hula hoop artist and instructor based in the U.K., originally from Washington D.C. She is most known for integrating multiple skills together — rollerskating with multiple hula hoops (from 3 to 30 at a time) and fusing hoops with various club dance styles.
Hula hooping was her first love, but she continues to learn other skills and perform between circus and live art shows.
Born in Virginia, Symoné grew up across Europe and the U.K. because her family worked for the Embassy. She is self-taught and started experimenting with circus skills while involved in the underground party scene.
"I saw two women hula hooping and thought: I've never seen anyone manipulate an object with their body so gracefully. It was so surreal — I knew I had to learn."
She spent her first year learning from YouTube tutorials, inspired by Lisa Lottie and Tiana Zoumer. She found hooping empowering while going through depression — it became a method of healing.
After moving to London for university, Symoné auditioned for a hoop performance troupe and got in. Her first show was at the London King's Cross Torch Relay for the 2012 Olympics. In 2016, mid-degree in Anthropology, she was invited to perform internationally for Machel Montano and OMI in the Caribbean — she chose the tour over university and never looked back.
She has since built a thriving solo career performing between circus, live art, and international stages.
- There is no end point to learning
- "I can't" no longer exists in my vocabulary
- No limits — just endless possibilities
- You can fall in love with an activity and make it your full time job
Symoné is developing a live art and circus theatre production called UTOPIAN, exploring inventive uses of the hula hoop as a central element. She is also working on two world records with hula hoops — titles kept secret until the attempts.
She continues teaching, creating new movement with the hoop, and integrating it with her ever-growing range of skills.
